The discovery of finding the gold of the Islands

(Group trip)

Do you know where the word Rum comes from?

"Rum” is the diminutive of "saccarum officinarum" that is the original name for sugar cane. The word time has been transformed over by the French language and has become the “Rum” that we know today.

The history of rum is by definition related to that of sugar cane.

It was introduced to Martinique in 1640 and thus constituted a profitable crop that allowed Europe to be provided with a supply of sugar. Years ago, the sugar factories multiplied, and the production of the precious crystals required more and more manpower. Therefore, it was for the requirement of cheap labour that was at the origin of the arrival of the first slaves on the island.

The production of sugar cane held important economic weight for many years before experiencing a period of recession at the start of the XIXth century due to the combination of several factors including the competition of beetroot sugar, the continental embargos of the Napoleonic years and the abolition of slavery that considerable increased manufacturing costs. To survive the recession, the sugar factories needed to adapt and find new by-products from sugar cane. It is in this way that, little by little, they started to produce agricultural rum, coming from the distillation of sugar cane juice (vesou). Over time, production techniques developed and know-how refined to give birth to the first French protected designation of origin certification rum in the world.
